Week of May 22nd

A special thank you to all of our families that attended our fundraiser this past weekend and supported our school.

This week we are learning about community helpers.

We will be creating shape firetrucks, cutting and pasting a matching activity, and building with play dough and Popsicle sticks.

Wednesday, we will have a visit from the PMT Ambulance.  They will be arriving around 9:30am.  On Thursday, we are set to visit the fire station behind our school from 10:00-11:00am.  If you do not attend school either of these days, you are still welcome to attend either activity.

Friday we will have fun playing "Baker" as we each make our own lemon pie for snack.

Please note that the Mother's Day Tea was moved to Thursday, May 9th at 11:15am.  I encourage all mom's and kids to attend the tea whether or not you attend school that day.  It is a special day for the kids.  Please let me know in advance if you will not be able to make it.

Thanks,
Kelly

Week of April 15th

We will spending the next week learning about pets!  What kinds of pets do we have?  How can we be responsible pet owners?  How do we care for our pet?

We will be playing a animal guessing game, matching food and animals.  We will be making yarn puppies and pet rocks.  Our math center will have dog treats and number matching.

Please have the children bring in their very favorite stuffed pet on Wednesday and Thursday.  They show and share at circle time.

Please remember:
*  Bring in your robot this week!!  Please spend the time to build with your child and you will see how incredibly proud they will be to show it to their friends.  It doesn't have to cost a thing... recycle!!  I have seen some pretty amazing robots.. check out the other classes for inspiration!

* Saturday is the silent auction/fundraiser.  This is a very important event for our school.  Please make sure your donations are in ASAP and get your tickets early.  You can win a free week of summer fun!!

*  If you want to join us for any of the trainings listed on the calendar.. it will count as your co-op!!  Ask me if you have any questions.

Thank you!!

Weeks of April 1st and 8th

We are ready for Springtime!  The next couple of weeks we will be all about the changing season.

We will start this week learning about flowers.  We are learning that flowers are living things and therefore they need sun, soil, and water to grow.  We are learning about why leaves face the sun, that flowers come in different shapes and colors, and why fresh cut flowers eventually wilt.  We are going to continue to work on our shape patterns by creating shape birds by tracing, cutting, and pasting.  We have been learning about seed to plant and have been excited by seeing all of the changes in the garden.  We will be reading The Little Seed by Eric Carle.

Next week we will be learning about the life cycle of a butterfly.  We will be exploring each of the four stages through discussion and art.  We will be working on our number recognition with ladybugs and catching insects in our sensory tub.  Our class will be getting our very own butterfly garden very shortly.

This month I will be changing our dramatic play area into a Veterinarian office as we start to learn about community helpers.  If you have any items you think may be fun to use in the "office", please bring them in.  Also, I am in need of a couple boxes of small face masks and gloves.  Thank you for your help.

I have arranged for PMT Ambulance to talk with the kids on Wednesday, April 24th.  The kids will all have a chance to get in the ambulance and see how it all works.  Hopefully, this will be their first time in an ambulance.  :)  It will be lots of fun.  Also, I have tentatively scheduled to tour the Fire Station behind our school on Thursday, the 25th.  I would appreciate having an extra parent that day as we venture across the parking lot.  It is not a field trip that requires all parents.  If you do not attend school either day, please know you are welcome to join us for either activity.  I will confirm the dates of both as it gets nearer.

Please take a look at the co-op calendar.  There are a few days I still need some help this month.  Thank you!

Weeks of March 18th & March 27th

Welcome back!   Hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break.  This week is all about Rainbows.  We will continue working on sorting.  We will be sorting different size circles to create a rainbow necklace and sorting Skittles by color and then counting them before we eat them (at least we will try!).  We will be mixing colors and creating patterns and designs with our light table in the science center.

Before break, the kids were having so much fun with warm, bubbly water in the sensory tub.  They were using funnels and bottles to see how fast the wheel on the water tower would spin.  I will let them continue their hard work with more water this week.

Towards the end of the week into the beginning of next we be making our baskets for our Easter Egg Hunt next Wednesday.  Please remember to bring in a clean clear gallon milk jug this week.  If you have more than one, that would be great too.

I have added staff training dates to the calendar on the blog.  Parents are always welcome to attend any of these sessions.  They are at the preschool, usually in our classroom.  If you do attend, it will count as one of your co-ops for the month.

Weeks of Feb 25th & March 4th

The next couple of weeks will be spent learning about how to be healthy.  We will start to get the garden ready for planting.

We will learn about how making healthier choices eating choices make us feel better and grow stronger. This will include learning about all the food groups and why they are important.  We will talk about where this food comes from, how we can prepare it and how it helps our body.  We will be playing tray memory with different veggies and fruits during circle time, making real potato heads with grass seed, and even learning how to use some great kitchen utensils.

We will be working on sequencing.  This is a great way to learn where our fruits and veggies come from.

I encourage you to provide a fresh fruit or veggie if you are snack parent.  Have fun with it... Fruit & cream cheese pizza, yogurt parfait, smoothies...

Please help me to keep the book club going.  We will pick a name tomorrow for the student to bring their favorite book in this week to share with the class.

One last item, please sign up to help with the fundraiser.  This is our one big fundraising event and it requires the help of all of our families.  If you have any questions, please ask me.  Those of you that are on the baking or events committee, please touch base with me.  If you are unsure what you signed up for, the sign up sheet is on the tree in class.  If you have questions about seeking donations, please ask me.  You may be surprised how simple it is and how generous our community is.

Thank you.  It is such a great feeling when our cooperative community comes together and works to accomplish so much for our children.  This school is what it is because of the families.  I know we all want the very best for our kids and this is the time to step up and make this fundraiser the most successful one yet.

Weeks of Feb 11th and 18th

Last week we learned why it was so important to take care of our teeth and visit the dentist.  We put eggs in juice, water, and soda and predicted what would happen over the week.  We observed the changes and determined that soda and juice were stinky, make our teeth dirty, and were not healthy choices.

Our dental week came at the right time as we get ready for our Valentine's Day Party this week.  We will be making Valentine Day bags in class on Monday and Tuesday.  We will celebrate Wednesday and Thursday with festive activities and snacks.  We will talk about how we can show people we love and care for them.

On Friday we will have open doors.

Please remember there is no school Monday, February 18th for President's Day and an all school field trip on Wednesday, February 20th.  There will be no Stay N Play this day.

Weeks of January 22nd and 28th

The next couple of weeks will be all about Arizona and rodeos as we look forward to the annual SUMC My Partner and Me Rodeo.  This is a long-standing tradition at SUMC Preschool. The rodeo will be Saturday, February 2nd at 9:00am.  Be prepared to enjoy breakfast and cowboy fun with your little one.

In preparation for the rodeo, we will learn all about the wild west.  We will talk about the 5 C's of Arizona.  It will be all about climate, copper, citrus, cattle, and cotton.  The kids will be tracing and cutting saguaro cactus, cleaning copper pennies, and juicing lots of citrus. We will be talking about all of the great things Arizona has to offer.  We will also learn all about cowboys  and the rodeo.  What do cowboys do, wear, eat?  We will be getting ready for the Parada del Sol Parade and our own rodeo by sanding and painting our very own stick horses.

I will need each child to bring in a pair of adult size socks.  Bright, colorful socks would be great. Also, if you have any old fabric at home (plaids, denims, bandannas), I would gladly take it off your hands to use for our cowboys.

Please remember preschool registration for the 2013-2014 year starts next Monday, Jan 28th.  It will open to the public the following week.

Thanks,
Kelly

Weeks of January 7th and January 14th

Happy New Year!

The next couple of weeks is all about snow and ice!  This week our sensory tub will be full of snow to make our own little snowmen.  Next week we will have glaciers and arctic animals floating around.

We will be discovering how water turns into ice and ice melts back into water.  We will be exploring more color science as we mix melting ice.  The kids will be creating puffy snowmen and continuing their work on patterns with gingerbread men.
Next week, we will feel how blubber keeps polar bears warm with a shortening and ice water experiment.   This is lots of fun and a huge mess!   Be prepared if you are co-oping!  We will also be using circles in various sizes to build polar bears and build nests for winter cardinals.

Please remember there is a work party next Saturday, the 12th at 7:30am.
